Welcome from Professor Serwan M J Baban,
The Vice-Chancellor

On behalf of the University I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the University of Kurdistan-Hawler (UK-H) on what I hope will be an inspiring, challenging and enjoyable journey.
The UK-H was formed during 2006 based on an initiative of His Excellency Mr. Nechirvan Barzani. The objective is for the University to prepare graduates who will be able to contribute constructively to the future development of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
Hence, the University is an active participant in the lives of our communities, mandated with helping our region with formulating informed decisions and ultimately contributing to a sustainable future for Kurdistan and the wider region. Consequently, creating the right ambience on campus for a vibrant knowledge culture and intellectual ecosystem is one of the top priorities of the university. As such, the University will continuously strive to create the necessary conditions for the engagement of staff, students and the community in knowledge enhancement and scholarly activities on campus. Therefore, the university community is encouraged to indulge in continuous scholarly activities; this should be a way of life for all of us which will hopefully become part of our value system and culture. With a strong knowledge tradition, the actions we take and decisions we make would be guided by in-depth knowledge and sound judgements based on clear understanding and profound wisdom.
Our students and staff come from diverse backgrounds and cultures worldwide. However, we share an ethos that respects openness, inclusiveness, collegiality and diversity. I am proud of our talented, motivated and energetic staff, many of whom are leaders in their field nationally and internationally.
At UK-H we aspire to provide our students with high quality learning opportunities as well as programs, events and activities to get them more involved with life on campus and in the local community.
We believe in excellence and our aim is to nurture quality graduates who are experts in their fields and who can work confidently anywhere in the world. Above all, we are looking to produce tomorrow's leaders, mature well-rounded individuals who will lead, actively participate and contribute to society.
To new students; congratulations on your decision to study at UK-H. For me, there will be no more important challenge over the next few years than to ensure that this institution offers you an exceptional university experience. UK-H will provide you with the best possible conditions to succeed; in return you are expected to work hard, be conscientious and accept responsibility for your learning and progress. As a new student, you are hopefully feeling excited about what is to come, but you may also be a bit anxious as well. Please remember that we are here to assist you and more importantly to let you know that your success is our success.
For students returning to the UK-H; you will notice a number of enhancements to the UK-H rules, regulations, systems and structures all developed to ensure your success and to assist the University with its functions. Be guided by these and show leadership towards the new students and make the University proud of your achievements.
To the on-line visitor; At UK-H we believe that universities have a fundamental role to play in the culture and wellbeing of modern society, hence we aim to be the best in all that we do, working for, and shaping the world. I hope that you enjoy reading about UK-H, during your on line visit, and that this encourages you to learn even more about our University.
I believe that these are exciting and challenging times for the University, Kurdistan and the wider region. I believe we have the ambition, vision and more importantly, the people, to achieve our goals. Furthermore, I am delighted and feel privileged to be based in Erbil, a great historical city with a great future, and I look forward to further enhancing the relationships we have with our partners here, across the region and worldwide.

Again, welcome to the new academic year and seize the opportunities that come with being a part of the UK-H community.
