Welcome to the School of Access Programme |
Access is a two year, full-time preparatory course designed for suitably qualified high school graduates who wish to study an undergraduate degree level programme at the University of Kurdistan-Hawler. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of a good intellectual capacity, a high degree of motivation and a satisfactory level of proficiency in English language before being admitted to Access. Completion of this programme is a prerequisite for undergraduate studies at the university, but does not guarantee automatic admission to the Undergraduate Programme.

Entry Requirements |
Entrance to the university is competitive.
You must have graduated from high school with a grade point average of at least 75%, and a minimum English score of 80%. In addition to intermediate English language proficiency, applicants to Access must demonstrate the potential to develop analytical skills as reflected in secondary school transcripts, the results of which will determine whether or not you will be permitted to sit University of Kurdistan-Hawler entrance exams. Applicants who do well on the entrance exams will be invited to an interview, which will determine the final list of candidates for our programme. Aims of the School of Access |
Access is designed to provide the necessary skills and strategies for students of high potential to be able to successfully manage the demands of undergraduate studies related to the fields of Business and Management Sciences, Political Sciences, Economics, Social Sciences, and Applied Computing and Information Technology. All of our courses are taught in English.
The full-time, two-year Access study aims to:
• Support you in gaining entry to undergraduate degree programmes in the above-mentioned fields in the University of Kurdistan-Hawler
• Improve your understanding of, and ability to use, academic English appropriately and effectively at undergraduate level
• Provide you with a range of study, English, and communication skills to help you succeed in your academic and professional life
• Introduce you to an international educational system and to the lecture/seminar/tutorial format of instruction
• Provide you with a course load specifically designed to give you the skills necessary for the academic field in which you intend to specialize and the breadth of knowledge needed to understand the wider significance of your field of study

Teaching will mainly be classroom-based (full-time for an average of 18-22 hours per week) and will include further self-study, research, and revision. You will be taught in small groups (a maximum of 15 students) for all of your classes in Access.

Programme Content |
Access Year One
Year one gives students a foundation in the communicative skills that are required at University and in your undergraduate degree programme. You will develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and strategies to further your comprehension and expression in academic English. You will also be introduced to skills considered essential to beginning academic study in English, including taking greater responsibility for your own language and skills development outside classes by applying taught strategies and feedback in your own work and study. You will take courses in the following specific areas:
- Reading

- Computing Fundamentals

The year one curriculum is designed to: |
• provide practice in seminar skills and academic discussion so as to help students express opinions and arguments clearly and concisely
• develop foundational writing skills
• make students quick and effective readers
• provide opportunities for listening to native speakers in conversations, lectures, and seminars
• develop note-taking skills
• develop students’ grammatical competence
• expand vocabulary, idiomatic and social language skills
• provide foundational maths skills
• familiarise students with the international academic environment
• develop computer literacy ability to enable students to word process written assignments, to use PowerPoint for presentations, among other specialized skills

Access Year Two
The aim of the second year of the Access Programme is to further develop the skills acquired in the first year as well as strengthening the skills required in international universities such as preparing and writing academic research papers, avoiding plagiarism, dealing with academic texts, and participating in lectures and seminars. Year two is comprised primarily of content-based courses designed to expand your breadth knowledge and further develop your skills in preparation for undergraduate study. You will take courses in the following specific areas:
- English
- Modern World History
- Social Science
- Business, Management, and Marketing
- Mathematics
- Study and Research Skills

• broaden students’ breadth knowledge to provide a schema for undergraduate studies
• continue to develop academic study skills, with an emphasis on learner autonomy
