The English Language Unit |
|
All of the instruction at the University of Kurdistan-Hawler is in English. Students are expected to develop their
English throughout their course of study at the university. The English Language Unit is responsible for teaching Academic English and
English for Specific Purposes while helping students’ develop strategic competence in academic contexts. Students will take compulsory
courses offered by the ELU during every semester of their programme. The courses are designed to develop the skills necessary for
achievement at each stage of academic study.
English in the Access Programme
English courses are a core part of the programme provided by the Access School of Studies. In keeping with the goals of the Access School
of Studies, English courses taken in Access focus on preparing students for study in the Undergraduate Programme. We do so by addressing
the following necessary skills:
|
| » Developing strategies for improving reading speed and comprehension |
| » Expanding vocabulary |
| » Writing with grammatical accuracy, unity, and coherence |
| » Improving speaking and presentation skills |
| » Improving listening and comprehension skills
|
| » Introducing academic research skills |
|
At this level, the focus of study is primarily classroom-based, with tutorial support available through participation in the Learning Center [link to the Learning Center forthcoming]. While we strive to provide a comprehensive approach to learning Academic English, the rapid development of writing and reading skills is emphasized.

English in the Undergraduate Programme
English courses offered in the Undergraduate Programme are writing intensive. All students in the first year of their undergraduate studies will take two
semesters of English Composition. These courses are designed to develop students’ ability to
| » Identify, explore, and respond to problematic issues |
| » Focus on rhetorical aspects of writing |
| » Produce reasoned, structured, and coherent essays with mechanical and linguistic accuracy |
| » Work with university standards of citation, reference, and academic honesty |
|
|
|
In the second and third years of undergraduate study, students will take courses designed to complement their scheme of studies.
Further development of writing skills remains the focus, but the courses will be genre-specific. All English courses in the undergraduate
programme are delivered to small classes, in the form of workshops and
tutorials. For further information on the English language unit, please contact
