Global Financial Crisis and its Affects on Kurdistran Region
This is a joint programme between University of Kurdistan-Hawler (UKH) and the Kurdistan Centre for Economic Development (KCED).
To look at the implications of the current global financial and economic crisis on Kurdistan and its future economic development, with specific reference to key sectors. Such key sectors will include:
- A general analysis of the current financial crisis, its causes and impacts and likely consequences both locally and internationally
- The likely impact on the price of oil, how and why and its longer term impact on economic and political developments inside Ira/Kurdistan
- Kurdish relations with Baghdad and other political and international relations
- Impact on overseas aid from western countries and the development of Kurdistan
- Impact upon social and other development programmes

Call for papers
Rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq: with special reference to the federal region of Kurdistan
December 8-9, 2007, Hawler (Erbil), Iraq

The purpose of this conference is to examine the consequences of conflict in Iraq and the federal region of Kurdistan,
and the implications for post-war reconstruction and rehabilitation. It will bring together academics, researchers,
practitioners, policy-makers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private enterprises as a means of fostering
inter-disciplinary analyses of current conditions, post-conflict development processes, policy options, and reconstruction
strategies after decades of war.
The conference is jointly organized by the Hawler Institute for Economic and Policy Research (HIEPR) and the University of
Kurdistan Hawler (UKH), and will be conducted at the UKH campus in Hawler (Erbil) on December 8-9, 2007.
It is financially supported by the HIEPR, UKH, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), and some external sponsors.
Conference topics will include:
- Historical and structural legacies of Iraq and the Kurdistan region
- Reconstruction and development policies (past and present)
- Macroeconomic and sector analyses (electricity, energy, education, health care, housing, industry, petroleum, communication, transportation and banking, agriculture)
- State failure, governance, corruption and mismanagement of resources
- Political, economic and social instability
- The relationship between aid and debt relief and security, reconstruction
- The role of external aid on reconstruction processes
- The role of petroleum on development and governance
- Foreign capital flows and local management strategies
- Geopolitical and economic relations with neighboring countries
- Welfare and public economics
- Migrations and demographic changes
- Technological change and growth
- Effects of war and development on center-periphery relations
- Women and rehabilitation
- Strategies for dealing with social changes
- Impact of globalization on Kurdish identity
- Social and cultural trauma
- New challenges from the youth
- Neighboring nations and their relations with the Kurdish region
Participants
Participants are expected to represent universities, research institutes, government departments or international organizations.
Independent researchers and advanced PhD students are also welcome. Those interested in participating without
presenting a paper (i.e., chair a session, evaluate papers, contribute to editing) should contact HIEPR director, Professor Almas Heshmati at

Submission Guidelines
Those interested in presenting a paper should send
1) a 150 word abstract or a full draft;
2) three keywords (or JEL Classification Numbers) that describe the subject of
the submission;
3) a completed application form (see below) in
English to conference@hiepr.org
by June 30, 2007. Full panel and roundtable proposals are also welcome.
If accepted, complete manuscripts are due by October 31, 2007. Others wishing to attend but not present a paper
should send a brief letter expressing their interest in, and contribution to, the conference.

Funding
Depending upon need and resource availability, the conference organizers may
provide partial financial support for some paper presenters and participants.
Preference will be given to funding participants from developing countries with
GDP per capita below $2000, with an emphasis on those individuals representing
universities and research institutions.
The registration fee for non-presenting participants is $300.
This fee will cover conference materials, access to all sessions, reception, meals (three lunches, two dinners, and coffee breaks), and a one-day tour of historical places and sites in the mountainous region.
Special arrangements will be made with local hotels for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. Participating PhD students will be waived from the conference fee.
Conference language
The conference will be conducted in English. Special sessions will also be conducted in Kurdish and Arabic.
Post Conference Publications
Selected papers will be published in a special volume of conference proceedings or
special issue(s) of a peer-reviewed journal, coordinated by HIEPR and UKH.

UKH Facilitated the First International Chapter for WWFL
On August 10th, 2009, University of Kurdistan-Hawler (UKH) hosted the first international chapter for World's Women For Life (WWFL) Conference.
A variety of presenters from within and outside the KRG community have participated and presented technical papers.
This conference was supported and well presented by Ministry of Higher Education and council of ministries; as lectures were presented on the following topics after a warm welcoming remark from the Vice Chancellor Professor Serwan Baban of UKH.
The lecture topics were;
- Pre-emptive Peace- the only Peace that works. Presented by Dr. David Qazzaz.
- The future of human rights in Kurdistan, presented by Soraya Fallah
- Advocating for the powerless, presented by Sharon Linzey, Dh.D.
- Personal Strength: A Product of the culture of life ,presented by Dr. Lana Heightley
- The role of Kurdish women "Reality and Ambition, presented by Professor Sara Morgan
WWFL is a cultural movement that is primed to operate during peace, war and post-war periods for the purpose of promoting and protecting life. It is international and humanistic in nature, transcending borders like the Red Cross.
